The Surge
editPlot
editThe film begins with siblings David (Jake Young) and Perry (Janice Russell) heading off to visit their folks' hometown whilst passing by a remote, rural route. During their roadtrip, the car suddenly hits a supposed man lying on the middle of the road. Worried that they might have killed someone, Perry aids herself near to the body where it eventually reanimates itself into a zombie and attacks her. David comes to her defense but is killed in the struggle. A horrified Perry flees the scene and discovers what at first seems to be an abandoned farmhouse. She seeks shelter there, only to find a mutilated corpse and a pack of zombies. She is joined there shortly after by the farm's lone survivor Troy (Aaron Tolliver) and the two ran off to a near house by the hill and began the process of barricading the doors and windows, leaving their fate unknown.
A week later, Lily (Ro McLeod) awakens in a deserted house having no memory of her past and whereabouts. She checks the mansion and she is subdued by an unknown person (Hal Rodgers). Suddenly, a team of commandos which consists of Johns (Lewis Dunham), Nadia (Lana Fedorova), Ant (Ardeth Laconte) and Misha (Dylan Kondrashoff) soon break into the barricaded house and arrest the person, who introduces himself as Steve, who is revealed to be an ex-militant for the Area 35 deployment program. Johns explains that everyone in the group, except Steve, is an employee of C.A.P. Corporations, and that Lily and her partner James are assigned agents to perimeter the area. Minutes prior to their talk, the mansion mysteriously shuts down including its entire security with hordes of zombies entering the house. The team including Steve quickly evacuate the floor finding an underground passage of the abode. The group then follows the way leading to an abandoned corporate local office, where they find Troy and Perry in hiding - seeing zombies fill the city streets of Newport. Thereafter, they head off to a near underground train station having had tracked James' location where they travel through the railway in foot.
Before the group splits into teams to find James, Lily asks Johns about Nadia's cold forthcoming towards her, where he reveals to her that Nadia and James sort of have a "thing" in the group. Moments later, Troy discovers a dead reanimated corpse and James (Michael McCarthy) chained in one of the pipes with a bite mark on his arm. James asks Troy to shoot him in the head before he turns which he eventually does, which causes Nadia finding out to snap completely and shoots Troy while Troy shoots back and kills Nadia in the head. Having had heard the gunshots, Johns, Lily and Misha arrive to their location where Johns kills Troy as he reanimates. The remaining survivors reunite and decide they cannot stay underground any longer since zombies are coming - hearing the consecutive blow shots ignited by Nadia and Troy consecutively. Johns then makes a plan to fight their way the next day to a nearby marina, where they will travel on a survivor's boat owned by local sailor named Alan (Tom Messinger) as broadcast by James' communicator. Escaping the railway passage, the group then rests on a small shop by the downtown mourning the deaths of their fallen allies. The next day, Perry and Misha begin reinforcing a shuttle bus for their escape, while Lily, Steve, Johns and Ant go to a gun store to reload on their weapons.
At the store, while Lily and Johns are busy packing up the bags, Steve knocks Ant out, bringing most of their weapon supply and triggers a few shots in the air with his rifle causing a horde of zombies to crowd to their location as Steve escapes with Johns, Lily and Ant trapped in the shop. Having no choice but to contain their attackers, Johns sacrifices himself to stay behind and open the doors to activate an explosion to the siege as Lily and Ant run out from the back. Meanwhile, another group of horders overrun Perry and Misha's location, causing the two to take the bus and retreat with Misha ending up to be bitten by one of the zombies while closing the doors. This in turn with having no control over the wheel and having had zombies crowd their way, have Perry crash the bus onto a building which kills Misha then having him reanimate early as Perry regains consciousness. Before Perry though kills Misha with a broken shrapnel from the bus, however, Lily and Ant lock themselves in a church meeting up with a couple, Will (Patrick Markham) and Julie (Li Ann Chin). Inspecting the church, Lily finds a deranged man named Harris (Clarence Parker) who tells her that there are "demons in this place." Later on that night, they find the church is mysteriously full of aggressive mutations - zombies with enhanced senses; where Will and Harris are killed, but Lily, Ant and Julie are saved at the last minute by a heavily armed Johns, who revealed to had survived the explosion at the supply store. In the meantime, White House Initiatives and C.A.P. Agents try to locate their missing operatives and trackers. In the process, Jones (Esquire Sanders) - leader of the W.H.I.P., finds Perry in the middle of town and saves her. Not so far ahead, Steve was also found by the commando group where he reveals to Perry that he's the "only" survivor and that the others died in the struggle of an ambush. Meanwhile, as Jones together with Perry and Steve evacuate the city, Lily, Johns, Julie and Ant head to a near institutional building that leads to road cross near to the marina where they discover information and tests of the mutations. With more of the "monsters" soon about to pursue them, Johns activates the detonate button where they escaped through the second base rooftop jumping to an inflatable safety device although leaving behind Ant who has been bitten and decided to stay with the attackers to stall them as the building eventually explodes. The three soon make their way to the marina where a zombified Alan bites Lily before Johns knifes him in the head. Expecting to turn, Lily's wound suddenly heals itself spitting out a black residue from her mouth where she then falls unconscious. By sunrise, Lily awakens fine on a boat with Johns and Julie heading off east as a broadcast voices over that there are survivors and supplies in Nevada with Lily, Johns and Julie looking over the horizon. At the end of the credits though, another voice over from a man named Ivar (Zack Larsson) had him talk to someone that he's plan was successful for subject no. 38527 which also reveals that he was the one who had Steve inject something to Lily and had James tied on an underground railway with another failed subject and was the reason for shutting down the barricaded house and releasing the 'mutations'.
