Urban Myth: Rubber Johnny (Is he real?)

Okay.. so it's not an urban myth.

It's actually a video collaboration by AphexTwin and Chris Cunningham. The thread title got your attention, though, right? ;)

Check it out... it's plenty demented, freaky, and quite strange. For those who know Richard D. James' work, well... it's quite in par with his usual fare. It far surpasses "Come To Daddy" in freak value and culture shock.

Apparently this is based on an actual person that has a disease, but I don't remember what. He is kept in a room with little or no light and all he has is his dog (which you see in the video). The video actually shows the kid in the beginning, but the video has been sped up and over-dubbed with some talking. At the end it is obviously not him, but "apparently" the beginning is real footage that has been tweaked.

Understatement of the fucking year!

I think I want that 5 minutes of my life back and to erase those images from my brain.

I know what you mean I don't want that stuck in my head. If you're desperate there is always a substance called alcohol that good with making you forget stuff. :1orglaugh

Yeah... I thought you guys might need a shocker like this to get your mind off of all the hot women!!

Sorry if I offended anybody, but it just freaks me out with what some of these recording artists and directors come up with now-a-days.

As for it being real? I honestly believe that's all part of the mythology truthfully. After I watched it, I loked it up on the 'Net (Google - 'Rubber Johnny Video') and it came back with several links detailing how they shot it.

AphexTwin is known for making strange videos; so strange that it's actually demented and kinda spooky.

Like I said, I hope I haven't offended you guys!! :o :dunno: :( I though it might be something to just... oh, hell I don't know.

Sorry! :o :wave2:

Yeah, I've seen that vid clip too.
All I can say is that anyone who could think up "Rubber Johnny" & "Come To Daddy" needs serious help...

Not offended though (definitely better than the remake of "The Haunting")

well, i have been a lurker around here till now. i just saw this thread, and being an aphex twin fan for quite a few years now, i felt the need to chime in. as a matter of fact, aphex twin does not make these videos. as someone earlier mentioned, this is actually a collaborative effort between aphex twin (aka richard d james) and chris cunningham. cunningham is a director who has a knack for making disturbing videos, and he has particular interest in working with several well-known musicians that make music in an electronic sub-genre known as idm (intelligent dance music). he has also done videos for squarepusher, autechre, bjork, a lil commercial bit for boards of canada, among others.

but i do have to agree, its a twisted video. it's been a while in the making and the very beginning with rubber johnny sitting back in his chair as the music starts was actually a 5-second or so piece released back when aphex twin first released one of his most recent albums, drukqs. give some listen to aphex's music and watch some of cunningham's other videos and you'll be stuck in a k-hole.

and cunningham has a dvd that came out not too long ago with a few of his music videos he's done. it's pretty good, although i admit it's short.

Being a long-time AphexTwin fan myself, I have to point out my first post; the thread opener. And yes, Richard D. James has quite a bit of input into how his videos are filmed. He has had a major role in the production and direction of 'WindowLicker', 'Come To Daddy', and now 'Rubber Johnny'. While it is true that Cunninghame is the guiding force, James is quite the visionary himself in not only the acid and trance music genres, but pioneering video as well.

Otherwise, you hit the nail on the head with everything else.

I hate to think how your missus will get her own back, though (lol)

don't know if is fake or not,is strange and different, strange and different is not egal with fake, but blame is on stupids who make fake video and present him like real, another story,i don't hear befor about this johnny, well,he ii................................diferent,and still many diferent peoples, animals in this world but we don't accept them existence because they are so unusual as agains us,we don't accept differences of skin color, but that kind of difference.................,so i hope he is real, and that have good people around ,what don't make him fell like a monster!

I have a couple of Aphex Twin CD's lurking around. I always thought "come to daddy" and "window licker" were great :D

I prefer Aphex Twin's ambient stuff. It's trippy and somber and ethereal as hell. But I also like some other stuff, like Milkman and Windowlicker. He's like Moby on a REALLY bad, dischordant acid trip!!! LOL!

By the way, Rubber Johnny is actually Richard James in prosthetics, as any fan of his can tell. Maybe the first 30 seconds were not him, but the rest of the video is him in that wheelchair.

Cool shit. I didn't find it scary at all. I found it odd, but not scary. A buddy of mine said it FUCKED HIM UP when he saw that video the first time. ;) I thought it was rather interesting!
